This Privacy Policy explains what data the “Daypu: Price Comparison & Tracker” extension (“Extension”) collects, how it uses and protects that data. By using the Extension, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
a) User Account Information
To use the cloud-based tracking features, you are required to create an account. We collect your email address and a password. Your password is securely hashed and stored on our servers (daypu.com). We never store your plain-text password.
b) Tracked Products and History
When you choose to track a product or view its price history, the following information is stored on our servers:
- Product name and URL
- Price information and currency
- E-commerce site hostname (e.g. amazon.co.uk)
- Price update timestamps
This data is used to provide you with price alerts and historical charts.
c) Local Settings
The extension stores some settings locally on your computer using chrome.storage, such as:
- Your chosen country / marketplace
- Your preferred currency
- Authentication token (to keep you logged in)
- Notification preferences
- Background price check frequency (Off, or every 3/5/8/12/24 hours)
2. Permissions We Request
storage— to save the settings listed in section 1c on your own computer.alarms— to schedule periodic background price checks at the interval you choose. Used only for this purpose.notifications— to show a desktop notification when a tracked product’s price drops, if you enable it.- Access to the e-commerce websites listed in the extension’s permissions — to read the price and name of the product you are viewing and to compare prices across those sites.
We do not request permission for, and cannot access, websites outside the listed e-commerce sites.
3. How We Access E-commerce Data
The extension accesses the e-commerce websites listed in its permissions (such as Amazon, eBay, John Lewis, Currys, Allegro, etc.) to:
- Identify the product you are currently viewing.
- Retrieve current price information to display on the widget.
- Perform cross-searches on other platforms to find the best price for you.
This data is processed locally in your browser. Only when you explicitly choose to “Track” a product, or when the extension updates the price of a product already in our database, is the product information described in section 1b sent to our servers at daypu.com.
a) Background Price Checks
Background price tracking is disabled by default. If you enable it in the extension’s settings, the extension periodically refreshes the prices of the products in your tracking list at the interval you selected. This runs only while your browser is open.
For each product, the extension first checks our server: if another user has already refreshed that price recently, no request is made to the retailer at all. Otherwise, the price is read in one of two ways:
- Direct background request (most sites). The extension requests the product page in the background and reads the price from it. No tab is opened.
- Brief background tab (only where required). Some retailers load prices with JavaScript or reject direct requests, so the price cannot be read any other way. For those sites (currently Amazon and Argos), the extension briefly opens the product page in an inactive background tab, reads the price, and closes the tab immediately. The extension’s settings page lists which sites do this.
In both cases the extension reads only the product’s price and name. It does not read, collect, or store any other content of the page, and it does not add the page to your browsing history.
b) Cookies of E-commerce Sites
When the extension requests a page from a retailer, that request goes to the retailer’s own website and includes the cookies your browser already holds for that site. This is standard browser behaviour and is necessary because some retailers reject requests that do not include them. The extension does not read, collect, or transmit those cookies; they are never sent to our servers or to any third party.
4. Browsing Privacy
We do not collect, store, or transmit your browsing history. The extension only interacts with the specific e-commerce websites listed in its permissions to provide its core features (price tracking and comparison). We do not track your activity on any other websites.
5. How We Use Your Information
- To provide price tracking and comparison services.
- To send you notifications when a product’s price drops (if enabled).
- To generate anonymous, aggregated price history data for the community.
- To improve the features and performance of the Extension.
Your personal information is never sold to third parties.
6. Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously. All communication between the extension and our servers is encrypted over HTTPS. We employ industry-standard technical and administrative measures to protect your account information.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Your continued use of the Extension signifies your acceptance of the updated policy.
